Arsenal star Arteta steps up injury recovery

The former Everton midfielder has not featured for the Gunners since being forced off against West Brom in November but was involved as the Under-21s beat Blackburn Rovers
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has moved nearer to a return to the first team after playing 45 minutes for the Gunners' Under-21s side.

The former Everton man started against Blackburn Rovers at London Colney and, after Jeff Reine-Adelaide had given the home side the lead, Arteta went close to doubling their advantage but was denied by goalkeeper Ryan Crump.

The 33-year-old was then replaced at half-time by Ismael Bennacer as a second goal from Reine-Adelaide and a Donyell Malen strike sealed a 3-2 win.

Arteta has not featured for the Arsenal first team since a muscular injury forced him off during the 2-1 defeat by West Brom in November.

And though Francis Coquelin remains on the sidelines, Arteta could face further competition for his place once he regains full fitness with the signing of Basel's Mohamed Elneny seemingly imminent.
